Good argument; my thoughts run along similar lines. How to get the essence of what religion started as - a search for meaning and a step away from the life of the flesh - without the 10,000 "Thou shalt nots," sacred cows, and all the assorted detritus and mysticism. Unfortunately, the "spiritual but not religious" is clogged with any number of idiots whose beliefs come down to "whatever makes me feel Special;" no logical rigor or even consistent thought. You wind up with morally therapeutic deism at best, and woo-woo solipsism at worst. Wish I had a way to get through. Passed Unitarianism, now trying secular buddhism.
