It seems to my eye, that we too easily disregard the serious structural problems in our society at our peril, history can show us that for decades fascist persisted intent then as now with the destruction of our representative governance and tolerance of things subtle and gross, replaced with indomitable will to power. Of course fascism itself is not new, nor is the new flavor unique to America, totalitarianism of this sort that every society in human history can fall prey to, and we have a hyper-wealthy class intent on funding the absurd.

So here is where we lie and I think for me it's a reminder that our grand experiment is never over, it's not some fire and forget notion, it requires maintenance and careful administration on the part of the citizenry , and vigilance against those monied enough to suffer the hubris of thinking such a remarkable set of ideals cannot work, notions of liberty, civic participation, public resources to ensure people reach their potential, are good not just for America for for every nation for all time. What we choose to do in that absurd proposition in our time , is the question, for America as the great experiment is not ours to ruin, but ours to pass along.

So perhaps I'm a fool for thinking we are daring just to defend the virtues of our society against those who encourage a return to regression.

Ingratitude , is not I think a reflection of the national order of things, but is instead a reflection of the weariness that's set upon us over many years, the death-throes of one of our venerable political parties is now long overdue, and by happenstance it was the conservative mindset that fascists of 50 years back found most agreeable to their cause, but make no mistake they could have chosen otherwise.

So here's to the reconstruction of thoughtful and responsible conservative thought, may the old order die with expedition and the intemperance of the fascist death grip upon the corpse of the GOP lose it's grip.

So too the expression of religion in our society, may it turn back to those more canonical and traditional places and shed it's recent infections of tyranny and exploitation that have left many venerable religious traditions in dire straights.

Nearly killed now by the same maddening itch, control....over women who would want their self-determination, over children so easily exploited to the bases of impulses , gone are the higher sensibilities of humility, charity and generosity of spirit, replaced of course by dogmatic will to power.

As a conservative, few things infuriate me to the degree of progressives spitting in the face of changes that I don't want this country to make in the first place. It's because ingratitude is a social aesthetic for them. Every political camp falls victim to those that find their politics trendy or socially affirming as opposed to principled positions. But progressives hold outsized power and institutional capture relative to their numbers, and scoff at the not-so-marginal gains they've made, as if nothing short of perfection (in their eyes) will do.

I can imagine. My co-author Johan explores this more in another piece:

"The Left Won the Culture War. They Just Can’t Admit It."

The fact that modernity is so nice is precisely what makes the parts about it which are exploitative and ridiculous stand out all the more by contrast. Being grateful to what's good doesn't make us blind to what's evil: the financial system, the education system, our nonrepresentative governments (which are often unwilling to verify and audit the integrity of the elections that put them into place), and the culture of selfish individualism are creating a society where despite all this prosperity, we aren't reproducing at high enough rates to replicate our societies. That's a major problem, and you can tell people to be thankful for what they have all you want.. But at the end of the day, if people were really feeling secure, happy, and grateful to be alive, then they would want to share that gratitude and joy for life with their progeny, as opposed to demanding the right to kill the unborn at any point up to the moment of birth, or fighting for the right to own instruments of death, or demanding that people with different views from them be silenced.

"Our democracy" has delivered our nations into ruin. "Our democracy" has enriched the politicians running the racket and impoverished the citizens who pay taxes to it. "Our democracy" is the process by which oligarchical capital spits on the grave of the republican theorists who birthed America, and you'd tell us to be happy about it. Very stupid.
