First, America was created as a reaction to the 1250 years of Middle Ages wars, filled with "kings of divine right" and their religions. America is NOT Christian, but is tolerant of Christians and everybody else. E Pluribus Unum.

Second, the Founders set out specific values - called American Ideals - that were lifted straight out of the writings of Enlightenment philosophers. They based these ideals on the god-given right of people to rule themselves, instead of some god-endowed right of kings, popes, an old book, or some idolatrous god-man to dominate people.

America is a culture ... based on those American Ideals. It is only because we stopped orienting Americans to those values that we think it's possible that Americans are overwhelmingly Christian. The reason we stopped orienting toward American Ideals? Several forces (Russians, the rich, the elites) are against people ruling themselves, and have systematically attacked the public discourse to create chaos and confusion ... trying to kill democracy.

Enough ranting. Your posts are too long for a blog. Blessings. Keep writing.

I haven't read the article yet, I'm answering the question. A real American (as in citizen of the USA) is someone who has adopted the American Creed, and assimilated into Anglophonic American society.

A really thought provoking read on the question can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Who-Are-We-Challenges-Americas/dp/0684870541
